چکیده

New developments on laser heated diamond anvil cell are reported by introducing a system installed at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). With the system, a laser heating spot of 20 40 μm in diameter can be generated to temperatures over 3000 K for samples in diamond anvil cell; and the temperature gradients in the laser heated volume are less than 100 K. The system is based on the double sided laser heating technique, including (a) a heating laser system consisting of two Nd:YLF lasers with one operating in TEM00 and the other in TEM01*, (b) Kaiser holographic spectrometers together with the charge coupled device (CCD) for temperature measurement, and (c) optics that allows to combine various x-ray measurements. The system has been used to obtain in situ high P-T x-ray diffraction on metals, oxides, and silicates to temperatures over 3000 K and to pressures of 160 GPa. Study of the reaction products of SF6 and C in the laser heated diamond anvil cell by pair distribution function analysis and micro-Raman spectroscopy

The decomposition of SF6 in the presence of glassy carbon was induced in laser heated diamond anvil cells at 10 to 11GPa and 2000 to 2500K. The reaction products were characterised by synchrotron X-ray diffraction, including high pressure pair distribution function analysis, and micro-Raman spectroscopy combined with atomistic model calculations. The decomposition leads to elemental amorphous h...

Synthesis of Binary Transition Metal Nitrides, Carbides and Borides from the Elements in the Laser-Heated Diamond Anvil Cell and Their Structure-Property Relations

Transition metal nitrides, carbides and borides have a high potential for industrial applications as they not only have a high melting point but are generally harder and less compressible than the pure metals. Here we summarize recent advances in the synthesis of binary transition metal nitrides, carbides and borides focusing on the reaction of the elements at extreme conditions generated withi...

A Cross-Sectional Transmission Electron Microscopy Study of Iron recovered from a Laser-Heated Diamond Anvil Cell

This paper discusses the use of a focused ion beam for the preparation of crosssectional transmission electron microscopy specimens from small samples, typically 150 micron in diameter, that have been recovered from a laser-heated diamond anvil cell. We present preliminary observations of iron melted with helium as the pressure-transmitting medium to pressures near 4 GPa. The project is designe...

Combined resistive and laser heating technique for in situ radial X-ray diffraction in the diamond anvil cell at high pressure and temperature.

To extend the range of high-temperature, high-pressure studies within the diamond anvil cell, a Liermann-type diamond anvil cell with radial diffraction geometry (rDAC) was redesigned and developed for synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments at beamline 12.2.2 of the Advanced Light Source. The rDAC, equipped with graphite heating arrays, allows simultaneous resistive and laser heating while t...
